PEOSTA, Iowa — A new boutique has opened in the lower level of a Peosta salon.

Mayve, a women’s boutique, recently opened at 742 Peosta St. below Ultimate Impressions Salon & Spa. The space previously housed Next Level Dance Company, which in January moved to a new building on Cox Springs Road.

“(In Irish), Mayve means ‘woman of power’ or ‘she who rules,’” said co-owner Lucy Rahe. “That’s what we want to be known for — for creating a space that is uplifting for women and where they can feel their best.”

Mayve started as a small retail space inside Ultimate Impressions Salon & Spa, where both Rahe and Mayve co-owner Breanna Uppena work as stylists. The original idea was to offer clients an extra shopping experience to complement the salon’s other offerings, Rahe explained.

When the building’s lower level opened up, however, the pair jumped on the chance to expand the business. The expanded retail space opened earlier this month, but an official grand opening celebration is slated for April 5.

“I think people knew that we had that space upstairs, which has really helped drum up some interest in the new space,” Uppena said. “All our clients and our friends and family, everyone has been really supportive.”

Mayve’s accessory and clothing inventory ranges myriad styles, Rahe said, meaning there’s “something for everyone.” Sizes range from extra-small to 3XL, and styles range anywhere from simple, elegant pieces to more trendy, standout items.

Some of those items were available in the upstairs retail area, Uppena added, while others are new additions that they didn’t previously have space to display. The new space also is equipped with a self-checkout kiosk for additional convenience.

“We’re excited about the different opportunities we have with this new space,” Uppena said. “We’re already thinking about having women’s night events or other things where women can come and just be themselves and meet new people.”

Mayve is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. More information and online ordering are available online at mayveshop.com.

SW Wisconsin bar changes hands

A southwest Wisconsin bar is now under new ownership.

The Burg, located at 134 W. Water St. in Shullsburg, now is owned by Kim Pahnke, Dale Brandt and Mark Doyle. Doyle is an original owner while Pahnke and Brandt replace former owners Jeff Doyle and Robb Paquette.

“Really, we’re just looking to build on what Mark, Jeff and Robb built here,” Brandt said. “We want everyone who walks in the door to feel welcome to just stop by, relax and hang out with good people.”

Pahnke has worked at The Burg in a variety of roles for roughly six years while Brandt has worked there as a part-time bartender for a little over a year. Mark Doyle has been with the tavern since it first opened in 2015.

Already, Pahnke said, the tavern is known for its high-quality menu items and laid back atmosphere, so she and Brandt don’t see the need for any major changes. They are looking to add more live entertainment options, however, as well as minor menu changes.

The tavern currently carries a full menu ranging from pizza and hand-breaded chicken strips to flatbreads and fresh fish.

“It’s not your typical, greasy bar food. Everything we make is homemade,” Pahnke said. “We try to have a good variety of options.”

The Burg is open Wednesday through Sunday 11 a.m. to close. The kitchen closes at 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and at 8 p.m. on Sunday. Information about rotating specials can be found online at facebook.com/theburgisgreat.

New coffee truck hits area streets

A new mobile business has launched in Delaware County.

Heather Vonderhaar, of Earlville, recently opened The South Side Sip, a mobile coffee trailer offering coffee and other refreshments. She plans to take the trailer to events throughout northeast Iowa, as well as organize pop-up sales at area parks or businesses.

“I’m just excited to meet new people and bring something a little different to Earlville and the other areas around here,” Vonderhaar said. “I’m hoping it’s something that can bring people together.”

Last year, Vonderhaar started participating in area vendor shows to showcase her handmade jewelry. Doing so helped her uncover an affinity for meeting new people while staying on the move.

The trailer seemed like an opportunity to expand her skills while also offering “something new” for the Earlville area, so she decided to purchase a trailer in Davenport to open a coffee shop on wheels.

“It already had a little kitchen area, so it just took a little bit of work to get everything else set up,” she said. “… I had a mural painted on both (exterior) sides of it, and that really just brought everything together.”

The South Side Sip menu includes a variety of coffee beverages, teas, hot chocolates and Lotus energy drinks. A small assortment of snacks also is available for sale, as well as some of Vonderhaar’s custom jewelry products.

Vonderhaar said she plans to take the trailer to area farmers markets and vendor fairs, among other events. Earlier this month, the trailer made its debut by participating in the Dyersville St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

“We went and just threw beads and candy out, really just to get our name out there,” Vonderhaar said. “It was actually really fun and really heartwarming because you could hear people getting excited when we drove by.”

Weekly updates on the trailer’s schedule and more can be found online at facebook.com/TheSouthSideSipIA. Event organizers also can contact Vonderhaar at thesouthsidesip@gmail.com about attending their event.
