Biz Buzz shares business tidbits from across the tri-state area. In addition to this update from Dubuque, we will share other developments in Wednesday’s edition.
New owners have taken over Dubuque’s store whose business model emphasizes low prices and treasure hunting.
Husband-and-wife duo Darrin and Brenda Dennis took ownership of DaaBIN Store earlier this year. Brenda Dennis previously worked as a floater for the company, which originated in Waterloo, Iowa, and now has several locations nationwide. She filled in as a trainer and store manager as needed at different store locations.
Recently, DaaBIN founder Andy Weichers offered her a position as manager of the Dubuque location and later, owner, alongside her husband.
Darrin Dennis said he is more of a behind-the-scenes owner while his wife still serves in a manager role. He said owning a DaaBIN Store has always been an ambition of his.
“It was my dream to own a DaaBIN store,” he said. “We always shop at them.”
The DaaBIN name originates partially from the initials of Weichers and his family and partially from the word “bin.” The store features a unique shopping experience in which items from warehouses, such as overstocked or returned items, are placed in bins around the store.
“All items in the bins are $8 per item,” Darrin Dennis said. “They go down (in price) as the week goes on.”
The store operates on a Saturday through Wednesday schedule. New items are featured Saturdays at the $8 price, but then go down to $5 on Sunday, $3 on Monday and $1 on Tuesday. Wednesday is a $10 bag day, when customers can fill a bag and pay that amount for it.
“We have 50 to 100 people waiting Saturday mornings,” Darrin Dennis said.
Certain items, such as furniture, electronics and auto parts, are under the “DaaBIGs” section, marked at 70 to 80% off market price.
Aside from the low prices, Darrin Dennis said another asset of his store is its diverse, ever-changing inventory.
“If you enjoy a treasure hunt — looking for items, finding that once-in-a-lifetime (product), come to DaaBIN,” he said.
Darrin Dennis said there have not been any major changes since he and Brenda took over. However, he said they are eager to keep serving the store’s loyal customers, many of whom they know by name.
Dubuque’s DaaBIN Store is located at 4470 Dodge St. Its hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday.
