Citing staffing woes, Manchester restaurant to close

MANCHESTER, Iowa — A Manchester restaurant announced that it will close permanently.

Today will be the last day of operation for Fireside Pub & Steakhouse, 205 S. 12th St., according to owner Trudy Dilger. The business will be open from 4:30 to 8 p.m. tonight. She advised that patrons call to make a reservation.

She said she made the decision to close the restaurant amid staffing shortages that have been felt by businesses across the region and nation, including hers. Dilger said she struggled to find enough help to remain open for the hours needed to survive and to cover the rising costs of doing business.

“I’ve been doing this for 32 years and four restaurants, and I’ve never had to work for employees like I’m doing lately, and enough is enough,” Dilger said.

Fireside Pub & Steakhouse has been open in Manchester since 2011 but was forced to close for an extended period after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and departure of its main cook. The restaurant reopened in November.

Dilger said she is appreciative of the business that people gave her and particularly customers who returned after the restaurant reopened.
