Dubuque-based Capra Bank plans expansion into New Mexico

A Dubuque-based bank is expanding into the Southwestern U.S. market.

Capra Bank this week launched a full-service branch location at 400 Tijeras Ave. NW, Suite 150, in Albuquerque, N.M. The branch will serve both private and commercial banking clients in the region.

Capra Bank was founded in 2022 and is headquartered at 955 Washington St. in Dubuque. The New Mexico branch marks its second expansion in the past year, as the bank last fall added a location in Lubbock, Texas.

“We have always planned on coming to New Mexico,” said Capra Bank CEO Tut Fuller. “It’s a robust market, and there’s a cultural fit in that there’s a lot of proud New Mexicans here who are proud of their community just like there are a lot of proud, involved community members in Dubuque.”

Fuller said the branch’s banking team was carefully curated to build a strong group of bankers with experience in the local market. The New Mexico branch employs roughly 15 people and will be led by branch president Andres Garcia.

Garcia has been a part of the New Mexico banking community for nearly 20 years and most recently served as president and CEO of New Mexico Bank & Trust, a division of Dubuque Bank & Trust parent company HTLF.

The new branch will follow the Capra model of delivering “banking without compromise” with a focus on strong, local talent and top-of-the-line technology.

“I’ve been in Albuquerque for almost 20 years, … and the community is demanding a bank like Capra,” Garcia said. “A lot of our community banks have been purchased by larger banks over the years, and we’ve lost a lot of those relationships and local decision making.”

Fuller said the Capra team is excited about the New Mexico launch, adding that he sees the expansion as a sign of the Dubuque-based bank’s dedication to growth and diversification. He views Albuquerque as a strong market and expressed confidence in the newly acquired team to meet local clients’ needs.

“When we think about banking at Capra, we think about the communities we serve,” Fuller said. “Banking done right can be a noble enterprise and can be a way to help take care of a community and help it grow.”
