National retailer to close Dubuque store amid financial struggles

The Dubuque location of a retail chain selling bedroom, bathroom and kitchen items will close permanently.

Bed Bath & Beyond released a list of 56 stores that the company plans to close. The list includes the store at 2475 Northwest Arterial, in Asbury Plaza.

No information was immediately available regarding when the store will close, but local customers over the weekend started getting emails from the store that were advertising sales while saying “everything must go!” The Dubuque store opened in April 2003.

The retail chain has encountered financial struggles. Bed Bath & Beyond faces a shrinking cash pile and is falling behind on payments to vendors, prompting some suppliers to halt or restrict shipments.

Late last month, the company announced it would close about 150 lower-producing stores and cut 20% of jobs across its corporate and supply-chain operations. The company said the efforts would reduce costs by about $250 million this fiscal year.

One other Iowa store was on the closure list — a location in Waterloo. Six Illinois stores also will close, but there are no locations in Wisconsin on the list.
