DYERSVILLE, Iowa — The Field of Dreams Movie Site has been sold and is now in the hands of an Iowa-based nonprofit.
Dyersville Events Inc. assumed ownership of the property Wednesday from previous ownership group Go the Distance Baseball, according to a press release provided to the Telegraph Herald on Friday afternoon.
The sale price was not immediately available.
“This new ownership agreement will lay the foundation for an inspirational vision for the next exciting chapter in the Field of Dreams story,” said Nate Runde, who serves as board president for Dyersville Events Inc., in the release.
The release states the change in ownership will ensure that the vision for the Field of Dreams property “is in the hands of Iowans in perpetuity under the stewardship of a Dyersville, Iowa-based nonprofit organization.”
The new ownership group said it is already planning to enhance and preserve the property, which over the past handful of years has been eyed as the possible site for a baseball mecca nestled among the cornfields northeast of Dyersville. Development of the site has been ongoing since 2022 and was originally planned to be completed by 2025 but has been hampered by issues, officials said.
Dyersville Events Inc. is working with “dynamic public and private partners” to facilitate the site’s development, according to the release. The development of the site has been slow going as officials said supply-chain issues delayed its progress.
Work on an $80 million project at the site, dubbed “Project Heaven,” commenced at the Field of Dreams property in the fall of 2022. The plans at that point included a youth sports complex, boutique hotel, RV park and amphitheater.
The project has received a total of $24.5 million in grant funding from the state of Iowa, along with another $7 million in pledges from Dubuque County and the cities of Dubuque and Dyersville.
At the beginning of summer, an estimated $500,000 in improvements had already been made to the movie site, including a 1,300-square-foot expansion of the event center, as well as the addition of permanent public restrooms, fiber-optic internet and cosmetic touch-ups throughout the site.
A permanent, 3,000-seat baseball stadium adjacent to the original Field of Dreams movie site is also under development.
Travel Dubuque CEO Keith Rahe, whose organization was hired by Go the Distance Baseball in the spring of 2023 to manage the Field of Dreams property, said the sale will push the site’s development forward, adding that even before the Field of Dreams site was sold to Go the Distance Baseball, talks of putting the site in the hands of a nonprofit took place.
Rahe said Dyersville Events Inc. will help the field grow as a tourist destination and national treasure. Rahe said he is thankful for the capital improvements made over the past few years by Go the Distance Baseball.
He said any further improvements will be decided by the nonprofit’s board, but emphasized that those involved are focused on growing and sustaining the success of the site.
“We’re really excited, it’s the next step for the legacy of the Field of Dreams to be a really premier destination,” he said.
