A local holistic healing center has relocated to downtown Dubuque.

Higher-Self Holistics last week opened its doors at 233 W. Second St. The center previously operated at 3003 Asbury Road, where owner Stacy Meyer first opened the business two years ago.

The center’s new location has a retail area that includes crystals, incense and tarot cards. The business also offers a variety of holistic healing services ranging from meditation and yoga to astrological readings and reiki.

“It all comes back to the curiosity of it all,” Meyer said. “… I am not someone that tells people, ‘You need to do this and this and buy this.’ I just give them the information and the resources, and they can take from that what they need.”

Higher-Self Holistics first opened in 2022, and its offerings since have evolved as additional facilitators or educators have joined the team.

Meyer said the recent move was prompted by a desire to increase the center’s visibility and walk-in traffic. The parking lot for the Asbury Road location could be difficult to get in and out of, she said, and the location had little foot traffic.

The new space is more accessible, she said, and it comes with the added benefit of joining the downtown business community.

“Being so close to the tourist-heavy areas, there’s a lot more walking traffic,” she said. “And with where the building is situated, we have ice cream on one corner and coffee on the other. There’s just a lot of things to bring people in.”

Meyer said anyone is welcome to ask her questions about the business, and she is excited to open up the center to downtown residents or visitors in addition to her longtime regulars and other repeat customers.

She intends to offer student discounts on some services to better connect with the local college community, she added, and the center has planned several community events throughout the fall and early winter.

“My goal is to create a community for those with alternative viewpoints to be able to come and meet like-minded people,” Meyer said. “It’s a space where people can feel welcome and accepted.”

Higher-Self Holistics is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Hours likely will be extended during the upcoming holiday season.

Dubuque coffee shop building new locationA popular Dubuque coffee shop has broken ground on its third location.

Charlotte’s Coffee House is set to open a new location on Cedar Cross Road in Dubuque next year. The building will be the business’ third Dubuque location, joining the downtown coffee shop at 1104 White St. and its drive-thru at 1600 University Ave.

“The whole thing is very exciting,” said owner Cheryl Rusk, who is working to open the new location with her son Tim. “We see this as an opportunity to serve people over on that side of town who don’t really have anything like this right now.”

The new location will be built across the road from Alpine Tennis & Fitness Club. Rusk said the coffee shop will be a standalone building with indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a drive-thru.

The location will be somewhat smaller than the downtown coffee shop, she said, though it will have the same menu.

“We’re going to try to replicate the same feel as the downtown location,” Rusk said. “Our mantra is that we’re like the living room of Dubuque, so we want to get that same vibe out at the new location.”

Rusk said the goal is to have the new drive-thru open in mid- to late winter with the interior ready for customers in late spring. Updates on the project and an eventual opening date will be available on the Charlotte’s Coffee House Facebook page and other social media.

Bellevue bowling alley under new ownershipA popular hangout spot is under new ownership in Jackson County.

Horizon Lanes and Hall in Bellevue now is owned and operated by Trevor Hager and Dawson Weber. The multifaceted business includes an eight-lane bowling alley, restaurant, bar and large reception hall.

“To keep it simple, we’re a bowling alley with good food, cold drinks and a nice events area,” Hager said. “We want people to walk in and feel welcome, like they can come to us with any questions they have.”

Both Hager and Weber are familiar faces at the bowling alley, which was run by Weber’s grandparents for many years until being purchased by Jared Feller and Brandy Dierks in 2018. Weber grew up visiting the lanes, and Hager spent the past several years working there part time.

When Feller and Dierks were ready to sell the business, they reached out to Hager and Weber to gauge their interest. The duo agreed it seemed like a good fit, and the ownership transition occurred in late August.

Many of the Horizon offerings will remain the same, Hager said, though he and Weber intend to standardize the hours and have made upgrades to the lanes’ electronic scoring system, among other improvements.

“We want it to be a place that people can rely on to come and have fun,” Hager said. “We’re planning on having a couple live music nights and other things to keep people coming out.”

Moving forward, Hager said he hopes to see Horizon Lanes and Hall retain its reputation as a community hub.

The lanes already are popular with area youth and adults alike and host several adult leagues, he said.

This fall, he said, the plan is to implement a youth league to ensure continued interest from the next generation of bowlers.

“Getting the younger generation into bowling is the next big thing for us,” he said. “We want to encourage kids to get involved so that they want to play in high school and then as adults after graduation.”

Horizon Lanes and Hall is located at 970 N. Riverview St. Starting this week, the business will open at 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The kitchen will open at 4:30 p.m. and close at 8:30 p.m., though the lanes will be open later for evening games.
